WEST began operations in 1984 as WEST Ltd. in Aberdeen, Scotland. After graduating with a degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering and working as one of the world's first subsea engineers with two of the largest drilling contractors, founder Michael Montgomery recognized the impact inspection and testing of DTE (Drill Through Equipment) and related systems can have on drilling costs. The result was the first company in the world to provide such third party services.

From these humble beginnings, WEST Engineering Services now offers engineering and rig based equipment and systems services across virtually the entire spectrum of drilling activities. After starting in Aberdeen, Michael recognized the concentration of both international oil companies and DTE equipment manufacturers in the proximity of Houston, Texas, USA, and moved the young company there in 1989 to better service the industry. Incorporated in Texas as WEST-Hou, Inc. the company experienced slow but steady growth, substantiating the value and cost effectiveness of assessments. Meanwhile, the company continued as an industry leader by learning from the numerous failures observed. Michael's contributions and technical excellence are demonstrated by his selection as a voting member of API section 16 committees, including Specification 16A Drill Through Equipment, which defines standards for new DTE.

Significant staff additions over the years have contributed to expanding both the technical quality and breadth of services. Primarily because of the increased utilization of engineering consulting services, the corporate name was changed once again to WEST Engineering Services. Today, the company consists of approximately 88 individuals stationed strategically throughout the world to address client requirements. WEST Engineering Services is unique in having "hands on" surveyors that are expert in how drilling equipment functions. At the same time, WEST Engineering Services employs a group of engineers that command a very good understanding of drilling equipment design theory, complementing the experience of those in the field. Together these two groups are managed by experienced project staff to ensure that client deadlines and cost requirements are addressed.
